UWS Nar Kye School is open!

QS are delighted to report that their first satellite school, UWS Nar Kye School in Myanmar has now opened!

There are currently 36 students attending, split across pre-school and Grade school. However there are a range of ages in Grade 1 as there was never a school there before, so all children over six have had to start in Grade 1. The older students will be supported to progress to higher grades more quickly, through an accelerated language course, as they are learning Burmese for the first time.

As there was no appropriate structure in the community already, a new educational space has been built using bamboo provided by the local community with a tin roof, and latrine and washing facilities have been built alongside the school. The classrooms are fully equipped with learning resources, including pencils, paper, curriculum textbooks, whiteboards and library books.

Although the school hasonly just opened the classrooms are already decorated with lots of colourful, educational posters and an outdoor playground has been created with swings.

Nar Kye School has two fully trained community teachers who speak the local dialect of Lahu as well as Burmese. This enables them to teach the national curriculum which is written in Burmese, and includes Burmese, English, Maths, Social Studies and Science.

We look forward to bringing further updates on the progress of Nar Kye and the building of our other satellite schools in the New Year.

In the meantime, from all of us at Quadstar and the students at UWS Nar Kye School, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!
