United World Schools (UWS)
Founded in 2009, UWS works to ensure children have access to quality, inclusive education in remote and marginalised communities by collaborating with local partners, communities and governments.
Their low-cost, high-impact approach strengthens local capacity rather than creating dependency, allowing education systems to thrive independently. By focusing on long-term empowerment instead of short-term fixes, they aim not just to educate the future, but to transform it. Quadstar has proudly partnered with UWS to build schools in Myanmar, Cambodia and Nepal to help work towards UWS’ vision of a future with zero education poverty.
In 2017 Quadstar began the partnership with UWS, supporting their mission to transform lives through education. We built our first school in Krang Chek south-west of Phnom Penh which now supports education for almost 150 young students.
UWS’s work started with building schools but has grown over time to securing change at a system-level, training local teachers, and delivering community workshops to tackle some of the cultural barriers stopping children attending school.
So far, UWS has built 136 schools UWS in Cambodia, with his Majesty of Cambodia awarding UWS the Moni Sarapoin Mohaserey Wat Award in appreciation of their contribution to education and literacy.
After the successful 2017 school-building project in Cambodia, Quadstar teamed up with UWS to build 6 smaller satellite schools in 2018 in Myanmar.
In the townships of the Shan State where UWS operates, literacy rates are as low as 35% and 1 in 3 children have no access to a classroom at all.
UWS is partnering with communities in the Shan State to rebuild the education system and provide life changing access to primary education by building schools and Community Learning Sites that meet national construction standards.
Our last school funding project with UWS was In 2019. Here we built a large school facility called Sathtare School located in the poor region of Sankhuwusabha, East Nepal. The school has been a huge success with 225 students registered by 2021.
In the remote communities of Nepal, poor access remains the biggest challenge to attending school. Many government facilities are located far from rural communities, meaning children must cross dangerous terrain to get to their nearest school.
Consequently, literacy rates remain among the lowest in the world – just 10% of people in rural populations can read and write.
Giving children local access to a classroom is an important first step. Now, UWS are working to creating learning experiences that inspire children to stay in school.
Quadstar is honoured to be a part of UWS’s great work in combating education poverty.
